Women's Advisory Council Accomplishments and Recommendations January 20, 2007 LAS VEGAS, Nevada The Senior Softball Women’s Advisory Council (SSWAC) met here during the Summit on Jan. 20-21, 2007. National Chair Connie Byro presented the Board’s recommendations. Summit delegates then considered the recommendations and Summit Recording Secretary Terry Hennessy presented the Summit response: Accomplishments» ID cards were provided to Advisory Council members for identification at tournaments. » Connie Byro took over as the new Chair of SSWAC. » We will work to publish a set of guidelines on how to prevent and handle heat exhaustion. » We updated membership guidelines. » We will be establishing a formal set of by-laws for the SSWAC. » We worked on recommendations for many of the women’s rules. Recommendations Here are the Recommendations presented to the National Senior Softball delegates at the 2007 Summit in Las Vegas, and the Summit Response to the recommendations: » Web sites have been established where women’s information will be kept, including the Summit site. Organizations and tournament directors must pay attention to this information.Summit Response: Delegates agreed to check the Women’s Council section on the Summit Internet site (www.softballrating.com) for women’s rules and to pass the information on to the appropriate tournament directors. » Health information on all players (medications, allergies, etc.) should be collected by team managers and must be available in the dugout during all games in case of injury. Summit Response: Delegates thought it was an excellent idea and will recommend that managers collect pertinent medical data and keep it with them during tournaments. In addition, it was suggested that each player keep a CD case in his or her bat bag that contained pertinent medical information in case of emergency. » The Summit needs to establish a set of guidelines for dealing with sportsmanship issues so they apply to all organizations. Summit Response: Each national association already has guidelines for sportsmanship and conduct in the rulebooks governing play. Delegates recommended that managers check those rulebooks before competing in tournaments. In addition, the sportsmanship sections of each rulebook will be listed on the Summit website for easy reference. » We continue to recommend more variation for awards at tournaments. Rings can be replaced by necklaces, earrings, jackets, etc. Other awards could include coupons toward entry for next tournament, patches, bags, etc. Summit Response: Delegates thought this was an excellent idea and asked that the SSWAC make some specific recommendations on awards for women. » Communication with teams is essential during a tournament, and women’s teams must not be forgotten. It is essential to be sure that tournament directors have two or more phone numbers for a team during any tournament. Summit Response: Delegates recognize that is important to have solid contact information for women’s teams during tournaments and will remind tournament directors of the importance of having this information for ALL teams. » No double rostering. Summit Response: This issue needs to be brought back to individual associations for consideration because it entails rule changes that must go through the procedures of each association. Delegates recognize the problem it may cause to women’s teams. Additional Issue: SSWAC representatives said that altered bats were beginning to appear in the women’s programs and asked delegates to make sure their association made the new bat policy available to women’s managers as well as men’s managers. Delegates unanimously agreed that it was important that all managers were aware of the new policy. |
