Summit Meeting Minutes Las Vegas, NV January 14, 2006
Layla Bryan, Connie Byro, Betti Garnett, Pat Lawlis, Sylvia Mergl, Randy Moses, Colleen Needham, Judy Lee Schreiber, Cyndi Winslow, Karen Charette, and Connie Squires were present at the meeting. The minutes of the September meeting were distributed and approved without change. From now on, the council decided to meet in person once a year at the Summit. The remainder of business will be conducted via email. One specific time in the middle of the year, input will be solicited via email from members regarding topics of current interest, and these items will be discussed via email. Randy provided SSWAC ID cards to members and asked for feedback on how everyone liked them. The general reaction was very good. Connie S. will provide additional pictures from this meeting and will investigate "around the neck" lanyards for wearing the IDs at appropriate events, such as managers' meetings at tournaments. It was decided that a single ID card for players is probably a dead issue with the Summit, so the SSWAC will not deal with it any further. Nomination packages for the Hall of Fame have been started for Kay Ray and Ruby Wise. They will both be submitted in the Pioneer category. Layla will review the guidelines for eligibility for women in the Player category and will provide to the council so that all members can be knowledgeable on this issue. Information also needs to be available to teams/players at each World tournament awarding eligibility points. This recommendation went to the Summit for action. Pat L. reported on tournament lists and how to get tournament information to teams/players. The objective is to get tournament information out to as many teams and players as possible and as early as possible. Pat has emailed a tournament list to a large list of team contacts. Current lists are also available on 3 web sites: www.softballrating.com/women.php - the Summit site that has a printable list of tournaments, dates, and locations www.womensseniorsoftball.com - a site dedicated to women's information that contains tournament information, including contact information www.seniorsoftball.com/women - the SSWC women's page that lists all SSWC tournaments in printable form and has links to more detailed tournament information such as contact information Connie B. has been producing information posters containing names and pictures of SSWAC members for display at tournaments. These have been well received by the players because it lets them know who to contact with questions, suggestions, and concerns. Connie will produce posters for all council members so they can be displayed at as many tournaments as possible. Cyndi volunteered to help Connie. The council spent a lot of time discussing its set of rules to be published for 2006. The idea of the rules is to provide a set of recommendations for organizations and tournament directors to follow. The fact that they are recommendations needs to be emphasized so players realize that final rules decisions are up to the organizations and tournament directors. The 2006 recommended rules will be published soon, with the following modifications from last year: "Recommended" will be included in the title, and the initial paragraph will better explain the purpose of the rules. A paragraph on Equipment will state that individual organizations determine which bats and balls are legal for play in tournaments they sanction. The Competition paragraph will include provisions for 2 umpires to be used in all championship games, no double rostering to be allowed in championship tournaments, and double elimination format to be used at all tournaments. Age divisions will continue their transition to "true ages". The only age division that now has exceptions is the 50+ division. The Run Ahead or Mercy Rule paragraph will allow for either a mercy rule or a 5 run rule. A comparison chart of rules for all organizations will be attached to the end of the rules document. Other topics of rules discussion were the following: Women's rules are hardly mentioned in the comparison chart on the Summit web site, and many of those that are listed are wrong. Layla will put together a comparison chart of women's rules that will be put at the end of the SSWAC rules document. Masters division play needs to be kept to 2 days if at all possible because most of the players work, but night play is a good option for these younger players so appropriate scheduling time is available for all divisions at tournaments. Before changing the equalizer rule again, the council wants more information on possible alternatives that Pat L. proposed. The suggestion was for SSWC to try using the alternatives so the council can use feedback from teams before making any decisions to recommend to all organizations. Pat will change the SSWC rules to provide equalizer alternatives. The flip-flop rule is not understood by many teams, and its use has not usually been discussed at managers' meetings before tournaments. Its use has also been very inconsistent. The council recommended to the Summit that this rule be discussed at managers' meetings before it is used in a tournament. The Summit indicated that it is reconsidering using this rule at all. The council recommended to the Summit that championship tournaments should have a better variety of prizes. Rather than all being "ring" tournaments, they could have jackets, watches, money, tournament credits, or other prizes of significant value. The council desires that any future surveys should come from the SSWAC rather than an individual organization. Colleen volunteered to be the survey coordinator, with all survey proposals going to her. Discussion emphasized the need to keep the number of questions small in any survey and to publish a survey no more than once a year. The council held an election for the member who will become the Chair in January 2007. Connie Byro was elected. She immediately replaced Pat L. as Vice Chair. SSWAC accomplishments and recommendations from this meeting were presented to the Summit. The document provided to the Summit is attached to these minutes. Action Items: Layla will prepare a comparison chart of women's rules. Layla will provide guidelines for women players to be eligible for the Hall of Fame. Connie B. will provide SSWAC posters to all members to be displayed at tournaments. Connie S. will provide pictures for continuing use in ID cards and other SSWAC promotion. Pat L. will consolidate all rules input into the 2006 rules document and add the comparison chart. Pat L. will prepare meeting minutes and send to the council members. The National Senior Softball Summit approved a National Combined Senior Softball Rating System in its annual meeting in Marietta, Georgia, in February 2000. This website represents the combined ratings that are supported by all nine national softball organizations. If you have a question regarding the ratings, changes in team names, disbanded teams, or teams that have moved up in age group, or information concerning a team's ratings, you can contact any of the three members of the Ratings Committee listed on the appeals form. |
