Summit Meeting Minutes, Gallatin, TN September 15, 2005
Cyndi emphasized that her email address contains the numeral one after her first name. It is not the letter L. Pat Blackmon, Connie Byro, Betti Garnett, Pat Lawlis, Sylvia Mergl, Colleen Needham, Judy Lee Schreiber, Cyndi Winslow, and Patty Cox were present at the meeting. Judy Lee related that Wanda Lanham asked to be dropped from membership for health reasons. Connie Squires, the official SSWAC photographer, was present to take pictures. The minutes of the January meeting were distributed and approved without change. Sylvia asked Pat L to discuss a proposed formalized selection method for council members that Pat prepared. Pat displayed a map showing the geographic distribution of teams, and this was used as a basis for determining the geographic areas that require council representation. There was discussion about several of the points in the proposal, and changes were made. The final approved SSWAC Membership Guidelines are attached. A new California representative is required, and Connie B suggested making nominations as soon as possible. Connie B discussed ideas for promoting the SSWAC to the teams and players that we represent so they are aware of our existence and so we can get more feedback from them. She has produced posters that have already been posted at some tournaments, and she continues to advocate that all SSWAC members take posters that have names and pictures of SSWAC members to tournaments so players know who their representatives are. She has also produced the same information as a flyer that can be distributed. Connie asked for a one paragraph biography from each member that can be published along with their names and pictures. She suggested that member information be published in the Senior Softball News. She and Pat L will submit this information for the next edition. Sylvia reviewed the progress of recommendations we made to the Summit at the January meeting as follows: Age division transitions are still progressing as agreed. USSSA approval is still required for their transition to begin. Sylvia sent the letter approved at the last meeting to the USSSA asking for their cooperation in approving a transition to true ages for all of their womenÕs divisions. There have been no problems noted in the change to 11 defensive players in the 50+ age groups. Sylvia had indicated she wanted to start keeping track of tournament results. Pat L showed the council a matrix that she has developed to keep track of what teams have attended what tournaments and which teams have finished in the top 3 in each division. Sylvia is using this now rather than developing one herself, but this is just a first step in considering what information needs to be collected before we can begin to rate womenÕs teams. Pat discussed a meeting held in Palm Springs in April requested by Dan Needy of the Huntsman Games. It was attended by Dan, Pat L, Vicki, Connie B, and Cyndi. Dan was interested in getting started with rating womenÕs teams, but the general consensus was that we cannot even consider rating teams until all of the organizations use the same age rules for teams. Otherwise, we are Òcomparing apples and orangesÓ. Hence, we are just now beginning to explore what information we will eventually need to collect in order to start rating teams at some point in the future. We made a change to the equalizer rule in January, but teams and players are still not entirely satisfied with the equalizer rule. Pat Blackmon suggested that rather than adding runs, the younger team should play one player short. Not everyone agreed with that. Discussion centered on asking for more player opinions and talking about it again at the January meeting. We have been working on getting SSWAC members to provide more assistance at tournaments Ð with the approval of the tournament directors, of course. Connie B discussed that this has been started, but we will discuss it more in January. We have no good data yet on how well we are doing with getting two umpires at every championship game. This will be discussed more in January. Pat L discussed the use of the .47 COR balls at tournaments after this was approved by the SSWAC in January. Its use is still not consistent at tournaments. This is probably because some tournament directors do not yet know about the new rule, but the .47 COR balls are also getting harder to find. This needs to be discussed more in January. Randy was not present at the meeting to discuss the ID cards he had planned to make for SSWAC members. However, he later indicated that he still plans to complete them. This needs to be discussed more in January. Sylvia discussed the nominations for the Senior Softball Hall of Fame that the council had encouraged at the last meeting. It was decided that Sylvia will prepare the nomination package for Kay Ray, and Colleen will prepare the nomination package for Ruby Wise. There was no time left to discuss two other topics on the agenda: Tournament Coordinator report by Connie B Single ID card discussion by Randy These items will be discussed at the January meeting. The next meeting will be January 14-15 at the Senior Softball Summit in Las Vegas at Arizona CharlieÕs (Boulder). Action Items: Each member will prepare a one paragraph bio for SSWAC use and send to Connie B for coordination. Connie B and Pat L will submit member information to be published in the Senior Softball News. Randy will prepare ID cards for council members. Sylvia will prepare the package for nominating Kay Ray to the Senior Softball Hall of Fame. Colleen will prepare the package for nominating Ruby Wise to the Senior Softball Hall of Fame. Pat L will prepare meeting minutes and send to the council members. |
