Summit Meeting Minutes, September 9, 2004
Pat Blackmon, Betti Garnett, Pat Lawlis, Sylvia Mergl, and Patty Cox were present at the meeting. The minutes of the January meeting were distributed and approved without change. All action items from the previous meeting have been completed except for one. Pat has not yet provided a historical notebook of all SSWAC public documents. This action item will remain open. The members present discussed the upcoming LVSSA, SSWS, and USSSA implementations of the age division rule changes for next year that were agreed upon at the last meeting. Since none of the representatives for these organizations was present, Pat was tasked with determining the organizationsı implementation plans. She will write a letter to each organization complimenting them on this important decision for senior womenıs softball. Other rules issues were discussed, and there was general agreement that we would just like our consolidated rules to be distributed as widely as possible so they can be widely implemented. Sylvia will submit the consolidated rules to the Dorcester, ON tournament for possible implementation. Organization representatives will work to come as close to these rules as possible within their organizations. The members discussed the 2005 schedules. Pat tried to get input from as many organizations and tournament directors as possible on their plans for next year, but it is still very early. Tournament directors have been encouraged to work with other tournament directors to keep regional conflicts from occurring, and this has been happening to some extent. Pat will continue to verify as many of the tournament plans as possible and put the tentative 2005 schedule on the web site before the end of the year. At the last meeting, Pat Lawlis was appointed to a Summit committee to study how to accomplish a championship playoff. Pat had to report that this committee has had no activity so far. Hopefully, it will be addressed before the next Summit. Sylvia Mergl was congratulated on her recent induction into the Senior Softball Hall of Fame. Vicki Oltean chairs the hall of fame program for the women, and we need to get something on the web site to let people know to contact Vicki about this. Pat Blackman brought up a proposal that was presented to her regarding age division rules. The suggestion was made to use a 6 month ³window² when counting current ages for playing purposes, rather than using the playerıs birthday in the current calendar year. In other words, someone whose birthday is within 6 months of the tournament date would be considered one year older for that tournament. The council determined that this idea was not practical. We are attempting to simplify the age division rules, not complicate them more. No matter how the age division rules are formed, some players will always feel that other players are getting an advantage. The year of birth is the simplest method for determining player eligibility for tournaments, so we will continue to use it. The next meeting will be at the Senior Softball Summit in Cypress Gardens, FL on January 15th and 16th. At that time, Sylvia Mergl will assume the duties of SSWAC Chair and Pat Lawlis will become the Vice Chair. The council discussed ways that responsibilities for SSWAC interests could be spread out more among the members. Pat will put together a set of responsibilities for the office of Chair. She will continue to take care of the web site and possibly other matters after stepping down as Chair. One of her responsibilities as Vice Chair is to provide transition advice to Sylvia. Action items: » Pat Lawlis will provide letters to LVSSA, SSWS, and USSSA concerning the important steps they are taking in transitioning to true age divisions. » Pat will prepare meeting minutes and send to the council members. » Pat will get the updated rules posted on Summit web site. » Representatives will work to disseminate these rules as widely as possible, and organization representatives will work to use these as much as possible within their organizations. » Pat will get the tentative 2005 schedule on the web site as soon as possible before the end of the year. » Pat will put together information about the Hall of Fame program and get it posted on the web site. » Sylvia Mergl will distribute an agenda and information on the upcoming meeting at the Summit. » Pat will put together a set of responsibilities for the office of Chair. » Members will let Sylvia or Pat know what responsibilities they can assume for the SSWAC. » Pat will put together a historical notebook containing all SSWAC public The National Senior Softball Summit approved a National Combined Senior Softball Rating System in its annual meeting in Marietta, Georgia, in February 2000. This website represents the combined ratings that are supported by all nine national softball organizations. If you have a question regarding the ratings, changes in team names, disbanded teams, or teams that have moved up in age group, or information concerning a team's ratings, you can contact any of the three members of the Ratings Committee listed on the appeals form. |
