National Senior Softball Summit

2002 National Advisory Board recommendations

Recommendations presented to the 2002 National Senior Softball Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 19-20 by Advisory Board Chairman Carlos Becerra:

1. Geographical restrictions for players need to include areas more than states, but should limit rosters to two or three players at a maximum from across state lines. (Senior Softball World Championships has the best regional restrictions, except for California (SSWC cuts the state in half). The SSWC region for teams 65+ and older should be the entire state of California).

2. One National ID Card for all organizations. The fee for the 5-year card would be $100. The One Card would allow every association to track a player, his address, tournament awards and make it easier to check rosters.

3. Ids should be checked at all tournaments.

4. Adopt the use of a strike mat.

5. Scoring Plates should be used instead of Scoring Lines.

6. No Appeal for touching the wrong base at First Base. If a play is being made either from the outfield or infield at first base, the runner must step on the outside bag (the safety base) or the ump should call him out.

7. 70+ Teams should have the same geographic restrictions as younger teams.

8. The Summit should advertise in Softball Publications for new National Senior Softball Advisory members.

9. Standardize the pitch to the plate at 6 feet minimum and 12 feet maximum arc.

10. Umpires should give verbal calls on illegal (too high or too low) pitches.

11. Make sure the information published in softball publications is correct for each association, especially ball compression, whether a mat is used and the height of the arc.
